Mountaineering Tourism: The Implications Of Product Uniqueness And Activity On Market Segmentation, Special Interest Tourism Quality And Risk Management
Abstract
Mountaineering tourism is a hard adventure tourism activity that requires physical skills and experience that not necessarily everyone can do, but has special interests. Therefore, this mountaineering tourism can be categorized as special interest tourism in outdoor, sport and adventure clusters. The popularity and the increase in mountaineering activities has not been in line with the increase in study that develops an understanding the links between the uniqueness of mountaineering tourism with the quality obtained from this high-risk tourist activity and whether the risks of this activity are well managed. This paper contributes to conceptual understanding on the implication of the uniqueness of mountain tourism toward the tourist segmentation, the quality of special tourism obtained by tourists and the risk management that needs to be anticipated. The research uses a qualitative method approach, single case study design, conducted in the Mouth Slamet Central Java. Data collection using depth interviews, observations and documentation. The results of the study show that Mountain Tourism has several uniqueness, namely presenting beautiful scenery, offering various paths with different levels of difficulty, habitats of biodiversity, having mystical elements, having original forests, the highest mountain peaks and sunrises, and at the base of the mountain various tourist activities are developed. There are at least 5 market segments that are targeted for mountaineering tourism activities, namely the beginner segment, the experienced segment, the nature lover segment, the cultural and religious segment, and the photography enthusiast segment. The offer of special interest qualities includes the values of self-enrichment, usefulness, adventure and learning. These sources of tourism risk can come from nature, people, equipment, services and infrastructure provided.
